    Obituary Overview

    In Loving Memory of

Dickinson, Paul – Paul was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, on November 15, 1936 to proud parents Louis Stanley Reginald Dickinson and Esther Ann Clements. The family relocated to Hamilton in Paul’s early childhood. Sadly he lost his only sibling, Wayne, to illness at a young age.

Paul attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Cathedral Boys Catholic High School, and Westdale High School. He met the love of his life, Jane, at Westdale. Their first date at the local Wells Pharmacy soda bar was arranged by Paul’s friend, as he was too nervous to invite Jane himself. They married on May 23, 1959 and were blessed with 3 children: Lori (Michael 2019), Michael (Christine), and Glen (Julia). Paul and Jane provided a stable, supportive, and loving home for their family. They particularly enjoyed camping, making many friends along the way. Paul’s children fondly recall many cherished camping memories, including him doing the Michael Jackson moonwalk and the Russian dance after enjoying a few beers. Paul later became a proud “Pup” to Malena, Tyler, Brayden, Eric, Hayden, Quinton, Kellen, Parker, and Nolan.

After brief employment as a car mechanic, ambulance driver, and with the funeral service, Paul became a member of the Hamilton Fire Department on May 5, 1962. He enjoyed a dedicated, fulfilling, and decorated 31-year career with the department until his retirement on October 31, 1993. The pinnacle of Paul’s professional career was his promotion to District Chief. During his time as a firefighter, Paul made many lifelong friendships with his brethren.

Community was deeply important to Paul. He was a member of the Hamilton Fire Department marching band, volunteered for the Muscular Dystrophy Society, was the past President of the Hamilton Huskies Minor Hockey Association, and was a coach/manager for many minor sports associations.

Paul was a man of faith and an active and devoted member at St. Joseph’s, Canadian Martyrs, and Regina Mundi Catholic Churches. Paul most enjoyed his familiar pew, the fellowship of the 8am Sunday congregation, and most importantly the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

After losing Jane in August 1995, Paul enjoyed the companionship of Shirley O’Connor and later Blanche Hargrove. With these friendships Paul travelled to many destinations throughout the United States, the Canadian East Coast, and Ireland. Paul’s most memorable trip was to his heritage country of Ireland, with his sister-in-law Joy and her husband Greg.

Paul was a true lover of many sports. He excelled at football and was invited twice to the Montreal Alouettes’ training camp, making it as far as the final cut. For a few years he enjoyed racing stock cars with his good friend Al Branch. He was a long-time Hamilton Tiger-Cats season ticket holder. He also enjoyed attending Toronto Blue Jays home games and travelling to Toronto or Buffalo to watch his beloved Montreal Canadians take on their local rivals. One of Paul’s greatest joys was attending his grandchildren’s hockey or baseball games. He also loved golfing and going to the driving range with his sons and grandsons. Paul often fondly recalled his fishing and ice fishing trips with his buddies.

Paul was blessed with good health and independence for much of his life. He remained in his own home until last September, when he moved into his childhood home with Glen and Julia, who lovingly cared for him in his final months. Paul valued love and loyalty and these values will continue to live on in his family. Paul will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace, finally reunited with his beloved Jane.
