Peacefully,
passed away on October 27, 2016 at the age of 90. George grew up
originally in Corktown area of Hamilton, Ontario.
Pre-deceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Sylvia Ann Hooker.
Also pre-deceased by his sister Letty Norton, and brothers Bill
and Don Hooker (survived by brother-in-law Bill Norton).
George spent the last year comfortably at the Telfer Lodge
in Paris, Ontario and a recent short stay at Stedman Community
Hospice in Brantford, Ontario. Dear Father to Ann "Jera" Donelson (Fern) and Michael Hooker. Survived by his
grandchildren Scott Clayton (Shari) and their daughter Haley,
Lindsay Donelson and Brendan Donelson (Paula).
George was a
member of the RCNVR (Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve) at
the young age of 16 in WWII. He served on the HMCS Prince Robert
Navy ship in 1945 and went on a mission to Hong Kong to rescue
prisoners of war. He was also a member of the HMCS Prince
Robert Star Navy Band as a bass drum player.
When George came
home from the war he followed his passion of community service starting as a fire fighter with the Hamilton Fire Department and
then as a Lieutenant (Assistant Chief Fire Prevention
Officer) in the Fire Prevention Bureau. George served
for 37 years until his retirement at 57 years of age.
After
retiring, he devoted his time to his family, friends and his
church.
A special thanks to the staff at Telfer Place Lodge
and Doctors Singh, from paliative care and Dr Williams from
Telfer Place. Also thank you to the staff at Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford for all of your loving support, compassion
and attention.
A funeral service will be held on Friday,
November 4th at 11 am at St Stephen-on-the-
Mount Anglican
Church, 625 Concession Street, Hamilton, Ontario. Cremation to
follow.
