ENGELBRECHT, Frederick Bernard March 13, 1920 - May 23, 2018 With heavy hearts, the family announces the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Frederick Bernard Engelbrecht - family man, storyteller, professional firefighter and oldest RHLI Dieppe veteran. He was born and lived in Hamilton, Ontario all his life. One of 11 children, he was the last surviving member of his family. Predeceased by his loving wife June (2007) and son-in-law, Charlie Hook (2006). Survived by his children Lynda, Brenda (Don), David (Pat) and grandchildren, Ryan (Paula), Rob (Stephanie), Amanda, Shari (Tom) and four great-grandchildren, Matteo, Juliana, Shawnee and Ashton. He was a great family man - generous, caring and a father first. He loved golfing, fishing and curling. In later years, he took an interest in tracing the family tree and documented it extensively. Fred was a Royal Hamilton Light Infantry veteran who fought and was captured in the Dieppe Raid. He was a POW for 3 1/2 years before being liberated. After the war, he returned to Hamilton and joined the Hamilton Professional Firefighters. Fred returned to Dieppe on many occasions to remember and honour his fellow soldiers. He met Prime Minister Harper and received a standing ovation by the Senate and the House of Commons. He had the honour of speaking with Prince Edward at a ceremony at the Warplane Heritage Museum. He loved to entertain with stories of his life's many adventures - and always drew an audience. Many thanks and appreciation to the caring staff at The Wellington Retirement Home Residences and the RHLI. Visitation will be atBay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East on June 1 from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Funeral service will take place June 2 at 5 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
