It is with
profound grief and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing
of Douglas Johnstone at Juravinski Hospital on November 15, in
his 83rd year, and after a long and courageous battle with
Alzheimer’s disease, he climbed the ladder for the last time,
ushered by God to be in heaven. Our father was so much to so many. Beloved husband to Marilyn (Bachuk), his loving and supportive wife of 60 years who stayed by his side daily. Devoted and loving father to Jeff (Elaine), Darren (Andrea), Caralyn (John). Proud grandfather to Zachary, Rianna, and Spencer. Predeceased by his sisters Joyce Mead (Charles), and Anita MacDonnell who both figured largely in his upbringing. Caring brother-in-law and uncle to the families of the Meads, MacDonnells, Bereziuks, and Backuk family. Unwavering friend to many especially to two wonderful lifelong friends Cliff Shadbolt and Ron Reed. Douglas was a man held in high regard to those that knew him. He was honest, caring, and held to a higher purpose. He took great pride in public service and so it is no surprise he elected to spend more than 30 years saving lives as a firefighter with the Hamilton Fire Department. He moved through the ranks to become Captain before retiring. There he forged relationships that would last a lifetime. Above all else, he was proud of his family and grateful to those he came to know. He was a man rich in spirit, generous, kind, and will be remembered as a man whose integrity and character touched the lives of many. If the purpose of life indeed is to live a life with purpose, then this has been a life well served. We are left with heavy hearts with a void that will ever remain but are the better for it.

Forever in our hearts, till we are re-united once again. Doug will be laid to rest at The Resurrection Cemetery. A private family service will be held on November 22, 2021. Thereafter a celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Hamilton. Please sign the online Book of Condolences at |
