June 14, 1966 to July, 22, 1974 |
The body of Robert William Kottmeirer, 28, was recovered yesterday in a
spring near Jacksonville, Florida where he had gone swimming. He went to Florida last week to recuperate following an operation in February to transplant a new cornea on his right eye. "We didn't know what happened. They arrived on Sunday and went swimming for the first time on Monday. Then he couldn't be found," said his mother Mrs. Robert Kottmeirer, of Paradise Road North, Hamilton. A friend had gone with Mr Kottmeirer to Florida. He (Robert) had been a firefighter with the (Hamilton Fire) department until he entered Toronto General Hospital for the transplant operation. "He loved being a firefighter. He sas just fearless; He'd travelled everywhere and he'd had an exciting time in his short life," his mother said. "Several years agoRobert discovered he was losing the sight in his right eye,: she said. "He could manage fine and didn't tell the fire department because he loved his job so much," she said. Doctors discovered Mr. Kottmeirer suffered from a rare eye disease and waited some time before a donor cornea was available for his eye which had gone completely blind. "He had to have a second operation and for six months he couldn't move and had to stay in bed. The doctor had said the eye was now strong enough and that he shoul take a trip," she said Early this morning the family received a call notifying them the body had been found |
