Medical Benefits for Retirees Beyond age 65
   
         
    Below is an extract from the current contract (2023 - 2026)

    (i) A health and Dental Spending Account ("Spending Account") shall be extended to those members who retire after December 31st 2009. The spending Account will apply to members and eligible dependents.    
           
    (ii) The Spending Account will be available to members for the ten (10) years immediately following the member's 65th birthday or until death, whichever come first.    
           
    (iii) Retired members are to receive a Spending Account to a maximum of three-thousand dollars ($3000) per annum and will cover eligible Health and Dental Benefits available to the members under the current Collective Agreement. Effective January 1, 2026, increase spending account to $3,250.    
           
    (iv) All claims against the Spending Account will reflect the eligible maximums as outlined in the current Collective Agreement.    
           
    (v) All claims against the Spending Account must be accompanied by the original itemized statement and/or receipt from the medical service provider.    
           
    (vi) The Account survives for dependants until the date the member would have turned 75.    
           
    NOTE: For members that will turn 75 in 2026

From HR:

The members coverage will go until the end of the month they attain age 75 and yes they can use the full $3250 allowance for 2026 prior to their 75th birthday.

   
           
           
  NOTE Members that have dependants that normally qualify for coverage and are attending eligible education facilities may be required to submit required forms, ie. Otherwise benefits may be denied or delayed.

    SPENDING ACCOUNT CLAIMS    
         
    Retirees Pre-65 - Spending Account 85-801    
         
    Retirees age 65 - 75 - Spending Account 85-800    
         
    On retirement, the City of Hamilton will provide the retiring member with a card that includes instructions to make claims with Manulife by mail or for online. If the member retires prior to age 65, an additional letter should be provided with the new benefits account number, 85-800.
